World Cup Russia 2018 November 2014 Update

Starting in 2015 Aztec Warriors will start providing updates to the 2018 FIFA World Cup twice a month. We look forward to providing updates on everything that is happening with the hosting nation (Russia), travel options, ticketing, and more.  As we wrap up 2014 we hope to provide at least two more updates. So lets start, below are some of the things that have happened in 2014:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a federal law on the preparation and hosting of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia.

The law permits visa-free entry to Russia for all 2018 FIFA World Cup match ticket holders and free over ground travel on public transport 18 hours before and after matches. Below are some more details:

Visa-Free Travel

Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian government would grant fans traveling to the FIFA World Cup before and during the 2018 World Cup visa free. Entry visas would also be waived for players, team personnel and other foreign staff that are traveling to Russia for the tournament, Putin said

Free Ground Transportation

Fans with game tickets will be offered free ground transportation between host cities at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Alexey Sorokin (Image featured above), head of the organization committee said it was a stipulation in their bid,

"Free travel is a guarantee which we signed at the highest level during our bid."

The free travel will be through train and bus transportation. This is great news as fans have experienced rate hikes in the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and in Brazil. Fans that travel for the event will have to wait until the group stage draw, which happens on the December before the tournament. Which puts them at a disadvantage, as they have to plan quickly and purchase their tickets for ground transportation which six months.

"We'll come up with a very complicated system of using tickets to the game as tickets to a certain means of transportation," said Sorokin.

Russia will host the FIFA World Cup in 11 cities and use 12 stadium venues that will range from Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg in the north to Sochi in the south and Yekaterinburg to the east.

Hotels will be tamed

In Brazil, I experienced first hand the ridiculous hotel prices for very low quality rooms. Mexico almost not qualifying made it difficult to set up our base city in advance. For Russia we hope to get to St. Petersburg three days before the start of the tournament and travel from St. Petersburg to other cities.

Russia seems to be heading on a good path for setting up the World's largest tournament.  The Aztec Warriors will be planning to take a large group to the World Cup so be sure to follow us as we plan, design, and communicate how to prepare your trip over the next 3 years.  It will go by really fast and its important to plan ahead so you don't get lost in all of the administrative tasks.  We look forward to helping you plan your trip to the FIFA World Cup in Russia!
