Se Prendio La Vela

Mexico 3 - 2 Holland

Mexico gains a convincing win over an elite Holland team.

The biggest take away for Mexico from this international friendly was Carlos Vela and his left foot.

Mexico opens the score with a wonderful strike from Carlos Vela. An elegant left footed shot from outside the box, what a golaso. They call him, Bombardero, the bombardier. Vela was working hard pressuring Hollands back line and his hard work paid off. He looked experienced, polished, stronger, faster, decisive all which are the qualities of a great goal-scorer. However, he did look alien playing along other green jerseys. He has not played with the Mexican National team since 2011, but let us not forget that the core of this team and a variety of these players have won the World Cup as youth under 17, the Gold Medal in the Olympics, and 1st place in previous CONCACAF Gold Cup's so his addition only strengthens a developing team. It was clear that MNT are maturing into an international top team. With a mix of role players, star players, youth players and experience Mexico's future is optimistic.

Vela was fantastic but this was an overall team effort. Yes, Vela scored twice and Chicharito scored but the midfield controlled the ball and fed the strikers, while the defense stepped up and contained Robben and a potent Holland front line. Guardado, El Principito, was a workhorse capitan. Andrete was a great defender sliding near the goal line to save a tap in from Robben. Chicharito remained at the right places at the right time, however he could have finished better. And Robben, con lo mismo was trotting down the right side, near the box, dribbling with his left foot then quickly cutting to the left and taking dangerous shots going on target all of which where quelled by Memo Ochoa.

The crucial shift of the game was when Chicharito stole the ball in the middle of the field gave a taconsito to Corona who gave a perfect pass to Vela who shot it with his left across the keeper for a golaso.

Mexico's National Team is making a statement with the win over Holland. They are an elite team on the rise. The players look fired up with Vela's return. And a cloud of confidence and enthusiasm hovers over the Mexican team.

Vela does bring a new dynamic

Vela does bring a new dynamic to the team. Its will be interesting to see what will happen when Gio is integrated into the mix.
